In 2024, the China National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) approved a total of 228 new drug applications (NDAs), including 123 (54%) chemical drugs, 93 (41%) therapeutic biological products (TBPs) and 12 (5%) traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) (Fig. 1a; Supplementary Table 1). This total includes chemical drugs in classes 1, 2 and 5.1, TBPs in classes 1, 2, 3.1 and 3.2, and TCMs in classes 1, 2 and 3, as defined by the Provisions for Drug Registration 2020 (Supplementary Box 1), and excludes biosimilars, vaccines and diagnostic reagents.
