Patient organizations are reshaping rare disease drug development where conventional systems falter by integrating patient expertise, scientific stewardship, R&D infrastructure and cross-sector coordination to unlock therapeutic progress. Drawing on a global survey, interviews and practical experience, we propose a guide for strategically directing resources toward drug development goals.
