Surgical societies play a major role in leadership and career development. Understanding how different societies function on the local, regional, and national level will allow the surgeon to navigate these intimidating environments and gain priceless tools to make them more effective and successful. This chapter does not dive much into the science of leadership, but instead focuses on some of the human aspects of getting involved and finding leadership opportunities.
