Prof Anna-Mart Engelbrecht Anna-Mart Engelbrecht is a Professor of Physiological Sciences at Stellenbosch University, where she leads pioneering, multidisciplinary cancer research. She founded the Cancer Research Group, focusing on chemoresistance, phytopharmaceuticals, early detection markers, cancer metabolism, and personalized medicine. A strong advocate for innovation, she co-founded two university spin-off companies, Biocode and Phyenti, and has filed two patents. She established two interdisciplinary undergraduate programs integrating physiology with mathematical sciences, chemistry, patent law, and botany. Engelbrecht has received several prestigious awards, including the Marie Curie Scholarship and institutional honors for research excellence. She serves on the Governing Boards of the African Cancer Institute and the Institute for Biomedical Engineering. With over 100 peer-reviewed publications and numerous invited talks, she has supervised more than 50 postgraduate students. Her work exemplifies the power of collaboration across scientific disciplines to address urgent health challenges in South Africa and beyond.
