There is limited literature to describe the pregnancy outcomes of ovarian tumor patients undergoing fertility sparing surgery (FSS) from India. Thus, we sought to study the fertility and survival outcome in patients undergoing FSS for ovarian tumours.
MethodsData of 28 patients who underwent FSS from January 2010 to December 2020 at Tertiary Cancer Centre from South India were retrospectively analyzed. Key endpoints included fertility outcome (restoration of menses, conception rate, miscarriage rate); and oncological outcome (Disease Free Survival, Overall Survival). Chi square test and logistic regression were used to assess strength of association with fertility outcomes. Kaplan Meier analysis was used for estimating survival outcomes.
Results and InterpretationMean age of the study group was 26.4(7.5) years. Median duration of resumption of menses was 139 days. Fertility outcomes were favorable with a pregnancy rate of 62.9% and among them, the miscarriage rate was 11.8%. Disease recurrence was observed in 10.7% patients. Five year DFS and OS were 89.3% and 96.4% respectively. Age, tumour type, adjuvant chemotherapy or type of adjuvant chemotherapy did not show any significant association with fertility outcome (p > 0.05).
ConclusionFSS is a viable option for early stage ovarian tumours and it offers favorable fertility outcome in 62.9% of patients without compromising survival outcomes.
