From 2 to 5 May 2026, Nature Reviews Gastroenterology & Hepatology attended Digestive Disease Week in Chicago, USA. According to the organizers, more than 13,300 people attended the conference in person, with another 960 attending online.

Sessions at the conference cross-cut basic, translational and clinical science in gastroenterology, hepatology, endoscopy and gastrointestinal surgery. Basic and translational sessions covered advances in multi-omics, non-animal models and microbiome research (from artificial intelligence to engineering the gut microbiome for precision medicine). Clinical sessions addressed new tools to monitor and manage coeliac disease, dietary management of common gastrointestinal disorders and early management of inflammatory bowel disease.
